Easy Homemade Hummus

My go-to easy homemade hummus recipe! With just a few easy tips, you can whip up the creamiest, smoothest homemade hummus that’s even better than anything you’ll find at the store.

Hummus is a timeless classic, a delicious, creamy spread made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and spices. While it’s a staple in the Middle East and Mediterranean, there’s nothing quite like homemade hummus, and it’s better than anything you can buy in-store!

But here’s my twist on the traditional recipe: I’ve given it a fresh remix with a splash of sweet chilli, roasted red bell peppers, garlic, smoked paprika, and a touch of turmeric. These ingredients come together to create a hummus that’s not just a dip but a flavour-packed experience. The sweetness of the chilli and peppers balances the warmth of the spices, while the turmeric adds a golden hue and earthy depth. It’s a bold take on the classic that’ll leave everyone craving more!

What to serve with Hummus

There are so many delicious ways to enjoy this easy homemade hummus recipe, and with my twist on the classic, the possibilities are endless! It pairs beautifully with so many dishes. For a flavour-packed meal, serve it alongside my zesty chilli lime steak, where the heat from the steak complements the sweetness of the hummus. Or, for a more indulgent treat, try it with my smoked salmon sunrise bagel; the creamy hummus adds a rich contrast to the smoky salmon.

Hummus also makes a perfect dip for my golden summer rolls with peanut sauce, giving an extra layer of texture and spices to the fresh, vibrant rolls. And if you’re after something truly indulgent, enjoy it with my heavenly Vietnamese egg coffeethe hummus is a perfect side dish with crackers, providing a savoury contrast to the sweet, creamy richness of the coffee

This homemade hummus is a vibrant twist on the classic, featuring sweet chilli, red bell peppers, turmeric, smoked paprika, and garlic for a rich, flavourful kick. Drizzled with olive oil and topped with crumbled feta, fresh spring onions, and sliced red bell peppers (serving suggestion).

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained

  • 2 tablespoons tahini

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (plus extra for drizzling)

  • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • 2 small garlic cloves

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  • Blend the Hummus: In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, sweet chilli sauce, red bell pepper, garlic, smoked paprika, turmeric, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Blend until smooth and creamy, adding olive oil as you blend to help achieve the desired consistency.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed.
  • Serve: Transfer the hummus to a serving dish. As a serving suggestion, drizzle with a bit more olive oil and top with crumbled feta cheese, chopped spring onions, and sliced red bell pepper.

Notes

  • You can substitute the chickpeas with butter beans for a slightly different texture and flavour, while still keeping the hummus creamy and delicious!
  • Storage: This hummus can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. It may thicken as it sits, so you can stir in a little olive oil or water to loosen it up when serving.
  • Vegan Option: For a fully vegan version, simply omit the feta topping or replace it with a vegan feta alternative.
