What is Keema Curry?

Keema curry is a classic South Asian dish made with minced meat, often beef, lamb or chicken, cooked with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and a blend of warm spices. It’s a comforting, savoury dish that’s quick to prepare and incredibly satisfying.

I usually use curry powder for this recipe because it’s quick and convenient, but you can absolutely swap in curry paste if you prefer a more concentrated flavour – it works beautifully either way.

Keema is a wonderfully versatile recipe that can be adapted to suit your taste or what you have on hand, making it a regular in many homes across India, Pakistan and beyond.

FAQS

I use 10% fat beef mince for a good balance of flavour and juiciness, but if you prefer a leaner dish, you can absolutely go with 5% fat mince instead.

It goes perfectly with naan, roti, or plain basmati rice. You can also try stuffing it into wraps or serving it over baked potatoes for a fun twist.

I personally use the Le Creuset non-stick sauté pan. It’s my favourite for one-pot meals like beef keema curry. It heats evenly, cleans up easily, and the non-stick surface means less oil and no sticking, making cooking and cleanup a breeze.

Yes! Beef keema curry freezes beautifully. Let it cool completely, then portion into airtight containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Perfect for food prep!

A flavourful and easy-to-make Beef Keema Curry featuring spiced minced beef, peas, onions, mixed beans and tomatoes simmered in a rich coconut aromatic sauce. Ready in just 40 minutes, this comforting dish is perfect for quick weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Oil

  • 1kg Minced Beef, see notes

  • 1 Red Onion, diced

  • 3 Garlic Cloves, diced

  • 1 Bell Pepper, diced

  • 4 Vine Tomatoes, sliced

  • 1 Handful Fresh Basil, chopped

  • 1 Tin of Mixed Beans

  • 1 Tin of Coconut Milk

  • 1 Tin of Marrowfat Peas, see notes

  • 1 Large Potato, diced

  • 2 tbsp Teriyaki Sauce (optional), see notes

  • 1 tbsp Turmeric

  • 1 tbsp Ras el Hanout

  • 1 tbsp Paprika

  • 1 tbsp Chilli Powder

  • 2 tbsp Mixed Herbs

  • 1 tbsp Garam Masala

  • 1 tsp Ground Cloves

Directions

  • Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan over medium heat.
  • Add the diced red onion, garlic and pepper and cook until softened.
  • Add the minced beef to the pan, breaking it up until browned.
  • Add the turmeric, ras el hanout, paprika, chilli powder, mixed herbs, garam masala, and ground cloves. Cook for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices and release their aroma.
  • Mix in the sliced vine tomatoes, diced potato, mixed beans and marrowfat peas. Stir well to combine.
  • Add the Coconut Milk and bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potato is tender.
  • Stir in the teriyaki sauce (if using) and chopped basil. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to let the flavours meld. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

Notes

  • Minced Beef: You can use minced beef with different fat percentages depending on your preference. 10% fat works well for a juicy, flavourful curry, but leaner options like 5% are fine if you want a lighter dish. You can also substitute with other minced meats such as lamb, chicken, or turkey.
  • Peas: I prefer using marrowfat peas for their larger size and creamier texture, but you can easily substitute with regular garden peas if you prefer.
  • Teriyaki Sauce: I love adding teriyaki sauce for a touch of sweetness and extra depth of flavour, but it’s completely optional feel free to skip it if you prefer a more traditional taste.
